Box Score Boston, Mass. - October 18, 2014 - Junior midfielder Jessica Miller (Southbury, Conn.) and sophomore forward Amanda Calzolano (Levittown, N.Y.) both struck for the Springfield College women's soccer team, as the Pride defeated Emerson, 2-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field.
With the win, the Pride rattled off it's fourth-straight victory, improving to 8-3-2 overall and 5-1-1 in NEWMAC play, while the Lions fall to 4-9-1 on the season and 1-5 against league opponents.Springfield, ranked ninth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Regional Rankings, have posted four-straight shut-out victories. Senior goalkeeper Lucy Gillett (Rockville Center, N.Y.) posted three saves in the win, picking up her fifth shut-out of the season. Gillett, along with the Springfield defense has not allowed a goal in the last 392:58 of play.
With 14:23 remaining in the opening half, Jenacee Bradbury (South Portland, Maine) sent in a cross to Miller, who rose above her defender and headed a shot towards goal. After redirecting off of a Lion defender, the ball crossed the goal line to give the Pride a 1-0 edge.
With 22:26 left in the game, Calzolano notched her first-career goal to give Springfield a 2-0 lead, when a cross squeaked its way to the sophomore, who fired a shot into the top-left corner of the net to double the Pride's lead.
Springfield finished the contest with a 17-5 shot advantage, as well as receiving eight corner kicks to the Lions' two. The Pride will resume play on Tuesday when it will travel to Mount Holyoke. The game is set for 6 p.m.
