Box Score Springfield, Mass. - October 4, 2014 - The Springfield College women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with Babson College on Brock-Affleck Field Saturday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown.
The Beavers now stand at 8-1-2, 3-0-1, while Springfield moves to 4-3-2, 1-1-1 in league action.
The game, which was played in driving rain throughout, was a physical affair. The teams combined for 25 fouls, including 10 by the Beavers in the first 45 minutes.
Springfield had the first opportunity of the game after Babson was whistled for a foul in the box. However, Babson keeper Melina Kapotsis (Watertown, Mass.) made a remarkable sprawling save on Kelly Haines' (Easton, Conn.) bid to keep the game scoreless in the 21st minute.
Springfield took advantage of another Babson foul on a free kick in the 33rd minute. Brooke Hattinger (Weymouth, Mass.) delivered a perfectly struck ball from 25 yards out into the top right corner to put the hosts on the board.
Babson benefited from a Springfield own goal with just under 13 minutes left in regulation. Rachael Kantor (Westfield, Mass.) sent a ball into the box that was misplayed by a the Springfield defensive unit, and an attempt to clear the ball from danger resulted in an own goal, evening things at a goal apiece.
Springfield nearly ended in things in regulation, but a point-blank shot from inside the six-yard box by Mikaela Coady (Middletown, Conn.) was snuffed out again by Kapotsis.
Babson's Jennifer Narlee (Medfield, Mass.) had the best chance in either overtime session, but her header off a Meghan Tyson (Scarborough, Maine) corner kick glanced off the post.
The Pride held a 13-7 advantage in shots, and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks. Lucy Gillett (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) was credited with two saves, while Kapotsis made five stops on the afternoon.
Springfield will continue league play next Tuesday when it hosts Smith College at 7:00 pm.
