Men's Soccer Blanks Framingham State, 3-0

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - October 7, 2014 - The Springfield College men's soccer team notched it's fifth victory of the 2014 season over Framingham State on Tuesday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field. The Pride, who took the game 3-0, improve to 5-3-5 overall on the year, while the Rams fall to 4-6-1.

Junior goalkeeper Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) registered five saves in the contest, while Framingham State goalkeeper, Jacob Nichols (Sturbridge, Mass.) finished with five stops as well. The Pride held a 19-8 advantage in shots, as well as a 10-4 margin in corner kicks.

Springfield came out firing in the first half, holding a 12-4 shot advantage in the opening stanza. In the early goings, a well-executed give-and-go by sophomore forward Luke Alvaro (Chicopee, Mass.) and senior midfielder Joe LaBella (Wethersfield, Conn.) gave Springfield the first scoring chance of the game, when LaBella controlled the ball and found senior Tyler Allen (Southbridge, Mass.) inside the 18-yard box, who then drilled a shot at the net, only to have a Rams defender block the shot and roll out-of-bounds.

Framingham State's best scoring opportunity of the opening half came with 32:02 remaining, when Maycon Malta (Milford, Mass.) fired a shot from well outside the Springfield box that forced Schmid into an acrobatic diving save to preserve the clean sheet for Springfield.

Just a few minutes later, Springfield opened the scoring in the 20th minute when senior Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) launched a throw-in to the middle of the box, where a bouncing ball found its way onto the foot of LaBella, who then fired a shot at the net. After Nichols came up with a pair of saves against both LaBella and on the ensuing rebound chance by freshman Harrison Davis (Merrick, N.Y.), Davis was able to find the back of the net to notch his first-career goal, providing Springfield with a 1-0 advantage.

The Pride kept the pressure on in the second half, when junior forward Taylor Gilfoy (Holliston, Mass.) fired a shot on cage, that carried over the outstretched hands of Nichols and hit the crossbar.

At the 36:48 mark of the second half, a ball sent into the box from the left side of the field by freshman midfielder Curtis Bolduc (South Windsor, Conn.) was headed past Nichols by sophomore defender Nick Kobel (Webster, Mass.) from the back side of the net to push the Pride's lead to two.

Just 3:03 later, Matt Dickmann (Paxton, Mass.) delivered the Pride's third marker of the game as he hammered a ball from the top of the box off a feed from LaBella.

Springfield will resume play when it travels to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday to take on WPI in a crucial NEWMAC contest at 10 a.m.
