Box Score Springfield, Mass. - October 7, 2014 - A late goal from junior forward Nicole Fowler (Maynard, Mass.) pushed the Springfield College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)-foe Smith College on Tuesday evening at Brock-Affleck Field.
Springfield, who did not allow the Pioneers a shot during 90 minutes of play, posted 14 shots of its own as the Pride improved to 5-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in NEWMAC play. With the loss, Smith drops to 4-5-1 in 2014 and 2-2 in conference play. Springfield also held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Smith goalkeeper Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass.) finished the contest with three saves, while Lucy Gillett (Rockville Center, N.Y.) was not challenged, but picked up her second shut out of the season.
With 14:55 remaining in the contest, junior forward Jessica Miller (Southbury, Conn.) controlled the ball on the right side of the box and just before reaching the goal line, slid a pass to the middle of the 6-yard box to Fowler, who tapped the ball past Hall to give the Pride a 1-0 advantage late in the game.
Just minutes prior, Springfield had it's next best opportunity of the contest after Fowler drew a foul in the 58th minute just outside the Smith 18-yard box. Sophomore defender Elizabeth Monsen (Wayne, N.J.) then lined up and fired a free-kick at the net that bypassed the Smith defense and drilled the left post, keeping the game locked at 0-0.
Both Fowler and Miller registered four shots at games end, while freshman forward Dakota Kelly (Bethany, Conn.) tallied a pair of strikes over the course of the game.
Up next, Springfield will return to Brock-Affleck Field on Saturday, October 11 when it will host NEWMAC-rival Wheaton College at 1 p.m.
