Mount Holyoke Upends Women's Tennis 8-1

South Hadley, Mass – October 7, 2014 – Despite junior captain Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) winning in the No. 6 singles against Mount Holyoke, the Springfield College women's tennis team fell at the hands of the Lyons, 8-1 on Tuesday evening.

With the setback, Springfield's two-game wining streak was snapped, evening out at 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), while Mount Holyoke improves to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

Shemms defeated Mount Holyoke's Michelle Cai (Hong Kong, China) by a score of 6-2, 6-3 for Springfield's only win of the day. In the No. 1 slot, Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) gave Morgaux Holloshutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) a strong showing, as the sophomore took Holloshutz to a tie-breaker, but eventually fell 7-6, (7-1), 6-1. Junior captain Melanie Thulin (Manchester Center, Vt.) fought hard with Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India) in the No. 4 singles, but Tibrewal was able to edge her 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).

Springfield will resume play when it travels to NEWMAC-rival Wellesley on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
