Box Score Cambridge, Mass. - November 8, 2014 - Two goals in the last 14:42 of the contest lifted the Springfield College women's soccer program to a 2-0 victory over Babson College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium on the campus of MIT.
With the win, the Pride remain unbeaten through its last 11 games and improves to 12-3-4 and will advance to play Wheaton College on Sunday in the NEWMAC championship game at 1 p.m. Wheaton defeated MIT 2-0 in the first semifinal matchup of the day.
The two-time defending NEWMAC champions, Springfield has reached the title game in every season going back to 2008 and has not dropped a league semifinal match since 2006.
With just 14:42 remaining in the contest, sophomore midfielder Julia Cormier (New Bedford, Mass.) played a corner kick short to sophomore defender Elizabeth Monsen (Wayne, N.J.), who took one touch and drilled a shot that floated over the hands of Babson goalkeeper Melina Kapotsis (Watertown, Mass.) and into the left side of the net for her first goal of the season to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.
Just 4:49 later, freshman forward Kimberly Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) carried the ball all the way down the left sideline before cutting back to her right foot and after beating her defender, unleashed a shot that bent over the diving Kapotsis and off the right post and into the back of the net to give the Pride a 2-0 edge.
Senior goalkeeper Lucy Gillett (Rockville Center, N.Y.) posted six saves in the contest, preserving the clean sheet for the Pride. Her counterpart, Kapotsis finished the game with seven saves. Springfiield held an 18-14 advantage in shots and 7-4 margin in corner kicks.
Earlier this season, the Pride bested Wheaton College 1-0 on October 11 after a game-winning goal from Quiles with 17:27 remaining in the contest. Senior defender Kelly Haines (Easton, Conn.) chipped a free-kick into the box that Quiles redirected into the net for the games lone goal.
Going back to 2000, either Springfield or Wheaton has won 12 of the last 14 NEWMAC Championships, with the Pride winning four of the last six titles.
In that time period, the Pride and the Lyons have met five times in the title match, with Springfield coming away with victories in 2005, 2008 and 2012. Most recently, in 2012, the Pride bested Wheaton 4-3 in penalty kicks to give the Pride the championship, and a berth into the NCAA Championship Tournament.
