Men's Volleyball Hits .632 In Three-Game Sweep of Marymount

Springfield, Mass. – March 10, 2014 – The Springfield College men’s volleyball team hit a season-best .632 as it breezed past Marymount University in straight sets Monday evening in Blake Arena. The Pride won by the scores of 25-16, 25-15, 25-18.

The Pride improved to 17-7 with the victory, while the setback drops the Saints to 6-11.

Jimmy O’Leary (Reading, Pa.) produced a a match-best 10 kills at a .692 clip to go along with five blocks, while Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) added eight kills on a .583 hitting percentage. Sean Zuvich (San Pedro, Calif.) tallied seven kills on eight errorless swings, and Keaton Pieper (Dallas, Texas) and Luis Garcia Rubio (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) combined for 34 assists. Nick Ferry (Valencia, Calif.) registered a match-high seven digs, and as a team, the Pride totaled 11 aces, including three from Shaun Ermi (Rush, N.Y.).

For Marymount, Bryce Ernsberger (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished the match with a team-high 10 kills to go along with five digs and a pair of blocks. Bronson Summer-Torres (San Diego, Calif.) posted 21 total assists in the match for the Saints, who hit .226 on the evening.

Tied at six points apiece in the opening set, Springfield went on a 6-1 run, capped off with a kill from junior Angel Perez (Naranjito, Puerto Rico) in transition, forcing a Marymount timeout. Coming out of the break, the Pride didn’t let up, with two Zuvich aces pacing a push that saw the Pride extend its lead to 20-9. With a 24-16 grasp on the first set, OÂ'Leary picked up his seventh kill of the stanza to give the victory to Springfield.

After an eight-all start to the second, Springfield opened up a 7-1 burst, using a Malone ace to take a 15-9 cushion. The Pride continued to be put the pressure on from the service line, with an ace from Ermi giving the hosts an 18-10 advantage. ZuvichÂ's cross-court kill, his fifth of the stanza, gave Springfield the 25-15 win. As a team, the Pride hit .632 compared to the Saints .083.

In the third, a Springfield service error brought the Saints within 18-15, but four-straight Springfield kills, including a pair from O’Leary, put Springfield in control, 22-15. Luis Vega (Corozal, Puerto Rico) closed out the frame with a kill to complete the sweep.
