Hilton Head, S.C. – March 20, 2014 – The Springfield College women's tennis team battled to a 5-4 win over Clarion University on Thursday to finish its Spring Break trip with a 3-1 record.
Springfield led 2-1 after doubles play thanks to a 8-5 win at the No. 2 spot by Melanie Thulin (Manchester Center, Vt.) and Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) and a 8-4 victory at No. 3 from Alanna Grady (Springfield, Mass.) and Sydney Streimer (Mystic, Conn.).
The teams split the six singles matches to give Springfield the 5-4 win. Shemms cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No .4, while Grady posted a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5. The Pride's most convincing win of the afternoon came from Kesley Whelpley (Mastic Beach, N.Y.), who picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6.
The Pride will play again on April 6 when it hosts Salve Regina at 1:00 pm.
