Springfield, Mass. – March 29, 2014 - The Springfield College men’s tennis team opened up New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, falling 9-0 to visiting MIT.
At No. 1 singles, Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) went to three sets, falling 2-6 in the first set, taking the second set 7-5, then falling in the third, 7-10.
Joe Giannelli (Watertown, Conn.) also played well, forcing a third set in his match up at No. 4 singles. He fell 2-6 in the first set, won the second 6-2 then fell in the third, 8-10.
MIT also swept all three doubles match ups, with scores of 8-4, 8-4 and 8-2.
Springfield falls to 5-3 with the loss and will play again on Wednesday, traveling to Coast Guard for a 3:30 p.m. start.
