Norton, Mass. – April 5, 2014 – Although first-year Tanner DeVarannes (Lee, Mass.) defeated Jonah Feit (Los Angeles, Calif. 6-4,6-3 in the No. 1 singles match, the Springfield College men's tennis team fell to Wheaton College 8-1 on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Pride's record now sits at an even 5-5 and 0-3 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
Senior captain Joe Giannelli (Watertown, Conn.) battled tough, but was defeated by Will White (Nantucket, Mass.) in No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4. In the No. 1 Doubles match-up, DeVarannes and Giannelli fell to Feit and Danny Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif.) 8-4.
In No. 3 Doubles, Joshua Robinson (Southold, N.Y.) and Cody Rodrigues (Westfield, Mass.) played strong, but fell to David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany) and Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I.) 8-6.
The Pride will be back in action on Tuesday, April 8 when they will head south to Providence, R.I. to take on Rhode Island College. The match is set to begin at 3:30.
