Worcester, Mass.-September 23, 2014- The Springfield College women's tennis team reeled off its third-consecutive win on Tuesday evening after defeating Clark University, 8-1, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown on the Corash Tennis Courts.
The win boosts the Pride's record to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in NEWMAC play while the Cougars fall 2-6 on the season, and 0-3 in the conference.
Springfield opened up the evening with three victories in doubles action. In the No.1 doubles slot, Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Stephanie Foster (Woodbridge, Conn.) picked up a 9-8 victory after defeating Isabella Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and Stephanie Gallant (Charlton, Mass.) 8-6 in the tie breaker, while Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.) and Stephani Post (Westford, Mass) cruised to an 8-1 victory in the No. 2 doubles over Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine) and Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.). Melanie Thulin (Manchester Center, Vt.) and Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) rounded it off in the No. 3 slot with the 8-4 victory over Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine) and Sarah Clay (Ossipee, N.H.)
The Pride then sealed the victory, taking five of the six singles decisions. Foster posted a 6-1, 6-0 win against Kravitz, followed by a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 3 slot by Thulin over Snyder. Litchfield and Shemms captured 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0 wins at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively, and lastly, Kelsey Whelpley (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) sealed the victory at the No. 6 slot with the 6-2, 6-0 showing.
Springfield returns home on Thursday, Sept. 25 and will host Nichols College in a non-conference match-up at 4 p.m.
