Springfield, Mass. - January 10. 2015 - Despite a pair of first-place finishes from junior Callie Phillips (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Emily Medeiros (Wakefield, Mass.), the Springfield College women's swimming and diving program fell to Middlebury, 156-142 on Saturday afternoon in the Linkletter Natatorium.
Phillips was the top finisher in both the 200 Free, posting a time of 1:58.76 and the 500 Free, registering a 5:17.68, while also placing second overall in the 100 Free, swimming a time of 55.42. Starting off the day with the 200 Medley Relay, the team of Christiana Greco (Wilbraham, Mass.), Medeiros, Delaney Dyjak (Ludlow, Mass.) and Nicole Scotto (Southbury, Conn.) finished second overall, finishing with a time of 1:53.15. In the 1000 Free, freshman Kassandra Lamb (Reading, Mass.) took a first-place finish with a time of 11:01.81, before Greco raced to a second-place finish in the 50 Back with a time of 29.74.
Medeiros was the top finisher in the 50 and 100 Breast, as the sophomore edged Ann Carpenter of Middlebury by fifteen-hundreths of a second in the 50, posting a time of 31.62, before registering a 1:08.42 in the 100 for her second victory of the afternoon.
After Greco raced to her third second-place finish of the day in the 100 Fly with a time of 1:00.77, Dyjak took a first-place finish in the 50 Free with a time of 25.52. Springfield finished the day with a pair of second-place finishes, as Lamb took second in the 100 Individual Medley with a time of 1:04.15, before the team of Scotto, Christine Legsdin (Westminster, Mass.), Phillips and Dyjak raced to a 1:41.15 in the 200 Freestyle Relay.
On the diving board, Morgan Kitzmiller (Dover, Pa.) stole the show as the sophomore took victories in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter. On the 1-Meter, Kitzmiller notched a 254.63 to take the top spot, while junior Melanie Avdoulos (East Longmeadow, Mass.) finished with a 223.95, good for second. On the 3-Meter, Kitzmiller tallied a 265.58, securing first-place overall, while Avdoulos posted a 229.28.
Springfield will return to action on Sunday, January 11 when it will travel to Union College for a tri-meet with Union and Hartwick, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
