Women's Volleyball Wins Kean Invitational After Sweeping Olivet and Frostburg State

Union, N.J. - October 3, 2015 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team captured the Kean Invitational on Saturday as it notched two straight-set victories over Olivet College and Frostburg State.

The Pride, which is currently ranked fourth in New England in the latest New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Poll, bested Trine and Kean on Friday evening and is now 17-2, having won its last seven matches.

Lauren Holt (Granby, Conn.) was named the Most Valuable Player of the Invitational, while teammate Hannah Lozano (Stockton, Calif.) earned all-tournament team honors.

Springfield will play a critical New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Tuesday when it travels to play Clark at 7:00 pm.

Springfield 3, Olivet 0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-19)

In the sweep of Olivet, Holt led the Pride with 10 kills and two blocks, while Kayleigh Helgesen (Oceanside, Calif.) delivered eight kills, both at a .500 clip. Adding to the offense were right side Kelsey McGayhey (Shelter Island, N.Y.) and outside Jennifer Hurwitz (Longmeadow, Mass.) with seven kills apiece. 

 Marnae Mawdsley (Bolton, Conn.) and Molly Giannattasio (East Lyme, Conn.) combined for 33 assists as they directed the Pride's attack. Lozano racked up a team high 13 digs, as Hurwitz and Mawdsley both chipped in 10 digs. 

The Pride hit .386 in the match, with an impressive .433 and .429 clip in the first and second sets, respectively. 

Springfield 3, Frostburg State 0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-18) 

Holt was dominant again on offense, as she led the Pride with 11 kills, hitting .524, and powered the defense with a match high seven blocks, including three solo blocks. McGayhey added six kills at a .417 clip, while Helgesen added seven kills and five blocks. 

Mawdsley set a career-high of 18 digs, while Lozano was credited with 17 digs. Mawdsley and Giannattasio combined for a total of 25 assists as the Pride had a .308 team hitting percentage in their final match of the weekend.
