Springfield, Mass.-April 11, 2015- The Springfield College men's tennis program dropped a close 4-5 decision to Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference matchup.
With the loss the Pride drops to 4-7, 1-3 in NEWMAC play. Wheaton evens out to 5-5 on the season, 1-3 in conference.
At No. 1 singles, Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) pulled out the 6-2, 6-0 victory over David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany), while Will White (Nantucket, Mass.) slipped past the Pride's Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn.) in No. 2 play (7-5, 6-3). Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I.) was the victor in No. 3 singles for the Lyons, 6-3, 6-2 over Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y.).
Shreve Archer (Pebble Beach, Calif.) and Alden Zeff (Stratham, N.H.) both picked up wins in No. 4 and 5 singles over Springfield's Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn.) and Nate Weissman (Longmeadow, Mass.). Beynor fell 6-3, 6-4 while Weissman skidded 6-3, 7-6 (3). Joshua Robinson (Southold, N.Y.) concluded singles play with a victory over Jim Beaton (Groveland, Mass.) (6-2, 6-4).
The Pride won two of the three doubles matches. DeVarennes and Danielwicz claimed the No. 1 doubles title 8-2 over Gessen and Chan, and Grant and Beynor followed suit (8-5). Zeff and Butler finished the day with the 8-6 conquer over Weissman and Robinson in No. 3 doubles for Wheaton.
Springfield will travel to Clark University on April 15th in a NEWMAC matchup, start time is slated at 4:00 pm.
