Springfield, Mass. – April 8, 2015 – The Springfield College men's tennis program dropped a 7-2 decision to visitor Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup.
Springfield falls to 4-6 on the year and 1-2 in NEWMAC play. The Bears improve to 6-3, 2-0 in the conference, with the win.
Sophomore Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) was one of two winners in singles play for Springfield. The sophomore beat Coast Guard's Robert Renfrow, 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 at No. 1 singles, while junior Joshua Robinson (Southold, N.Y.) also won for the Pride, as he captured the 6-2, 6-7, 10-6 victory over Townshend Hirst in No. 6 singles play.
Sophomore captain Justin Danielwicz (Portland, Conn.) fell 7-5, 6-2 to opponent Mark Guentert, while Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn.) dropped his match with Weston Fortna (6-2, 6-2). Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y.) and Nate Weissman (Longmeadow, Mass.) rounded out singles play for the Pride and Grant fell 6-0, 6-2 in No. 4 singles to Michael Melampy, while Weissman suffered the 6-2, 6-4 setback at No. 5 singles.
DeVarennes and Danielwicz battled Mark Guentert and Fortna in No. 1 doubles but took the 9-8 (8-4) loss. Beynor and Grant also took the 8-3 defeat and Weissman and Robinson dropped No. 3 doubles 9-8 (8-3).
On Saturday, Springfield will continue NEWMAC play with a with conference rival Wheaton at 1:00 p.m.
