Springfield, Mass. - September 12, 2015 - Despite impressive individual performances from freshman Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) and sophomore Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.), the Springfield College women's tennis team suffered a 6-3 loss to Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon at the Appleton Courts.
With the loss, Springfield falls to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), while the Lyons pick up its first win of the 2015 season, and improve to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Litchfield and first-year Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) took the No. 2 doubles victory, defeating Caroline Stanclift (Camden, Maine) and Stassy Furber (Montpelier, Vt.), 8-6, as Springfield went into the singles matchups trailing the Lyons, 2-1.
At No. 4 singles, Etter was able to easily defeat Furber 6-0, 6-0, while at No. 5 singles, Litchfield took care of Stanclift, 6-2, 6-2, to claim Springfield's third point of the afternoon.
Senior Melanie Thulin (Manchester, Vt.) put forth a strong effort in the No. 6 singles slot, as she fell 7-6 (3-0) in the first set, before Connor O'Keefe (Lutz, Fla.) defeated her in the second set, 6-3. At No. 2 doulbes, Stephanie Foster (Woodbridge, Conn.) battled hard against Izzy Gorham (Durham, N.H.), as she took the second set 6-4, before falling 6-3 in the tie-breaker
Springfield will continue its competitive NEWMAC schedule on Sunday, as it will travel to MIT for a 12 p.m. match.
