Box Score Cambridge, Mass. - September 26, 2015 - Earning its fourth-straight victory, the Springfield College women's soccer program blanked MIT, 2-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium.
With the win, the Pride, ranked sixth in the latest Division III National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Regional Rankings, improve to 6-1-1 overall and 2-0 in conference, grabbing sole possession of first place. The Engineers fall to 4-3-1 overall and 1-1 in league play. With the win, Springfield has now won its last 10 games at Steinbrenner Stadium, including the last two NEWMAC Championships, and six victories in the last three seasons.
Junior goalkeeper Brooke Fairman (Huntington, Mass.) picked up a shutout victory in her first-career start for the Pride, while picking up four saves in the win. Her counterpart, Lauren Ullman (Princeton, N.J.) registered 12 stops of her own, as the Pride out shot MIT, 22-13, on the evening. Springfield also held a 9-5 margin in corner kicks.
Springfield opened the day's scoring just 17:50 into the contest, when senior forward Krissy Cicalis (Bridgewater, Mass.) drilled a shot from 20-yards out that drifted over the out-stretched hands of Ullman and into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie.
Following back-and-forth action for the beginning of the second half, Springfield added some insurance, when sophomore midfielder Monique Marcelino (Farmington, Conn.) blasted a similar shot as Cicalis', that found its way into the netting for her first-career goal to give the Pride a 2-0 lead with 10:29 remaining.
Fairman, along with the Pride's stout defensive unit was able to hold off a late charge from the Engineers, sealing the victory for Springfield.
Up next, the Pride will travel to No. 2 Williams College for a 4:15 p.m. tilt on Wednesday, September 30.
