Babson Park, Mass. - September 5, 2015 - Beginning the 2015 campaign, the Springfield College women's tennis program fell to defending New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Champion Babson College on Saturday afternoon at Farwell Courts, 9-0.
With the loss, Springfield falls to 0-1 on the year and in league play, while Babson is now 3-0 overall, and 1-0 in the conference.
Despite the loss, the Pride received a strong showing from seniors Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) and Melanie Thulin (Manchester, Vt.), who fell in the No. 3 doubles slot, 8-3, to Eleni Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) and Kylie Kam (Honolulu, Hawaii).
In the No. 1 singles slot, junior Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) fell to Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) 6-1, 6-4, before Stephanie Foster (Woodbridge, Conn.) dropped her decision in the No. 2 slot, 6-4, 6-0.
Springfield's closest bout came in the No. 6 singles slot, where Thulin took the first set over Kam, 7-6, before Kam claimed the second, 6-1. Kam would eventually break the tie and seal the 9-0 victory for the Beavers.
Up next, Springfield will travel to Nichols for a match on Thursday, September 10.
