Box Score Springfield, Mass. - September 6, 2015 - Behind goals from senior forward Jessica Miller (Southbury, Conn.) and sophomore forward Kim Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), the Springfield College women's soccer program picked up its first victory of the 2015 season, 2-0, over Westfield State on Sunday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.
With the win, Springfield is now 1-0-1, while the Owls fall to 0-2 on the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.) had a strong defensive effort in front of her, as she only had to make one stop on the afternoon. For Westfield State, Natalia Falcone (Sutton, Mass.) made the start, but Anne Stack (East Longmeadow, Mass.) played a majority of the contest, and made seven stops of her own.
The Pride outshot Westfield State 19-2 over the course of the game, including holding the Owls shotless in the first half, while Springfield also held a 9-2 advantage in corners.
It took Springfield 16:20 into the second half to break the scoreless tie, but Miller found the back of the net to give Springfield a 1-0 lead, as senior forward Nicole Fowler (Hudson, Mass.) tapped a pass through a pair of Westfield State defenders to a streaking Krissy Cicalis (Bridgewater, Mass.) who evaded Stack, then found Miller on the outside for an easy finish to get Springfield on the board.
The Pride would add an insurance goal with 11:00 left in the contest, as Quiles gathered a loose ball just outside of the box, and unleashed a shot that bent around the outstretched hands of Stack and into the right side of the net to give Springfield a 2-0 lead in the late stages of the contest.
Playing its third game in five days, Springfield will return to action on Tuesday night, and take on cross-town rival Western New England on Brock-Affleck Field at 7 p.m.
