Orlando, Fla. - March 18, 2016 - The Springfield College women's tennis team closed out its trip to Florida on a positive note as it defeated the University of Scranton, 7-2, on Friday morning.
Springfield took two points in doubles action, as it eased to victories at the top two spots. Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) registered an 8-3 win at No. 1, while Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) and Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) added an 8-3 win of their own at No. 2.
In singles play, the Pride took five of six matches, including a pair that were decided in a third-set tiebreak by Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.) at No. 2 and Nicole Piazza (Portland, Conn.) at No. 4. Parrish added a win at No. 3 as her opponent retired in the second set, Shemms cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5, and Fiona Stickney (Bayport, N.Y.) delivered a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 6 spot for the Pride.
Springfield will return north and play again on Wednesday, March 30 when it hosts University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez at 4:00 pm.
