Norton, Mass. - April 16, 2016 - The Springfield College men's tennis earned an important New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory on Saturday as it bested Wheaton, 5-4.
The Pride is now 7-5, 2-2 in league play and defeated the Lyons for the first time since 2012.
Springfield trailed 2-1 after doubles play, with Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.) and Court Honda (Marioka, Japan) producing an 8-2 win. Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) and Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn.) battled at the No. 2 spot beore being edged by a 9-8 (4) decision.
DeVarennes continued his strong play with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles play, while Romaine rallied for a 3-6, 6-1-, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot. Honda delivered at No. 3, 6-2, 6-3 and Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn.) added a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Springfield will play again on Sunday when it takes on nationally-ranked Amherst at 4:00 pm.
