Babson Park, Mass. - April 23, 2016 - Despite a win at No. 1 doubles from Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.) and Court Honda (Marioka, Japan), the Springfield College men's tennis team fell to Babson College, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Farwell Courts.
With the loss, Springfield is now 8-7 overall with a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) record of 3-3, while Babson is now 9-8 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Romaine and Honda defeated Victor Vu (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Saif Rahim (Hong Kong), 8-5, to earn the Pride's lone point of the match, as Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) and Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn.) fell to Roberto Perez (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) and Brandon Rosenbluth (Pound Ridge, N.Y.), 8-5, at No. 2 doubles, and Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y.) and Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn.) fell to Dom Wysolmerski (Rutland, Vt.) and Ben Roque (Coral Gables, Fla.), 8-6, in the No. 3 slot.
DeVarennes fell to Perez at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, while at No. 2 singles, Romaine was bested for just the third time this season, falling to Isaac Thylen (Surfside, Fla.), 6-2, 7-6, 7-5. At No. 3 singles, Honda fell to Vu, 6-3, 6-2, while at No. 4, Danielewicz dropped a 6-0, 6-4, decision to Rosenbluth. Lastly, at No. 5 singles, Beynor fell to Ho Wang Alastair Ng (Hong Kong), 6-3, 6-1, before the Beavers picked up its eighth win of the match when Dylan Levy (Miami, Fla.) beat Zack Keene (Feeding Hills, Mass.), 6-1, 6-1.
Springfield will wait to find out who it will face in the impending NEWMAC Tournament, that will begin with the first round on Saturday, April 30.
