Springfield, Mass. - April 30, 2016 - The Springfield College men's tennis team powered past visiting Wheaton College by a 5-0 score in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) ChampionshIp Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Courts.
It marked the first time since 2007 that Springfield College hosted and won a NEWMAC Championship event, as the Pride previously defeated Coast Guard by a 5-0 decision in the quarterfinals.
Springfield will now travel to face top-seeded MIT next Saturday for an 11:30 am tilt.
In doubles play, Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) and Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn.) claimed the first point of the afternoon for Springfield as they cruised to an 8-1 win over Alden Zeff (Stratham, N.H.) and Jim Beaton (Groveland, Mass.) at the No. 2 spot.
Springfield continued its momentum at No. 3 doubles on an 8-2 win by Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn.) and Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y.) versus Shreve Archer (Pebble Beach, Calif.) and Tyler Butler (Portland, Maine).
The Pride would then head into singles play with a 3-0 advantage after Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.) and Court Honda (Marioka, Japan) grinded out an 8-6 victory against David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany) and Jeremiah Ryser (Cross River, N.Y.).
Danielewicz wrapped up the first singles match of the day by virtue of his 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 4 over Zeff, before Romaine clinched the playoff victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot for the Pride.
