Box Score Lewiston, Maine - May 15, 2016 - Behind two goals from sophomore midfielder Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and a nine-save effort from junior goalkeeper Gabby Anderson (Mahopac, N.Y.), the Springfield College women's lacrosse team knocked off No. 9 Bates College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament at Garcelon Field on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Springfield College has re-established its program record for wins in a season, as the Pride is now 16-5 overall, and will advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history, where it will take on Catholic University. The game featured the fewest combined goals in the 36-year history of the NCAA Division III Lacrosse Championship.
The Pride's defense, which came into the weekend ranked No. 15 in all of Division III women's lacrosse with a goals-against average of 6.40, was led by freshmen Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.) and Andie Stone (Burlington, Conn.), who each caused a pair of turnovers, while Nusbaum and Stephanie Hyslip (Hanson, Mass.) each collected a team-best three ground balls.
Bates, which was ranked No. 9 in Division III women's lacrosse according to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) National Rankings, finishes its season with a mark of 12-6.
Senior attack Alex Broidy (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Kaileigh Maguire (Sudbury, Mass.) both scored for the Bobcats, while senior goalkeeper Hannah Jeffrey (Greenwich, Conn.) was sensational in net, posting six saves in the setback.
Both sides picked up 15 ground balls in the contest, while Bates held a 16-14 advantage in shots over 60 minutes of play. The Bobcats also had six draw controls to the Pride's one.
The Bobcats struck first, just 7:25 into the contest, when Kaileigh Maguire (Sudbury, Mass.) converted a free-position chance to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
WIth 16:55 to play in the first stanza, the Pride evened the score at one apiece when Mahoney drew a foul in the arch, resulting in a free-position opportunity, which she converted to make it 1-1 midway through the first half.
With under 10 seconds to go in the half, Springfield made a push to break the tie, when Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) caught a pass in the crease and fired low, but Jeffrey made the point-blank save, keeping the Pride at bay.
The Bobcats broke open the 1-1 tie with 20:59 to play, when Broidy took a pass from Moriah Greenstein (Glenmont, N.Y.) and found the back of the net, but the Pride quickly evened the score at two apiece when Kristina Krull (Leicester, Mass.) converted a feed from Kristen Steidler (Somers, Conn.) with 11:20 left in the game.
With under seven minutes to play in the contest, Mahoney took a pass from the top of the arch, and drove down the right side, before firing a shot past Jeffrey to give the Pride a 3-2 lead with 6:10 on the clock.
Both sides went back-and-forth for the remainder of play, but Anderson and the stout Pride defense was able to keep the Bobcats from pulling even, and escaped with the one-goal victory.
