Springfield, Mass. - October 4, 2017 - In their first home match of the 2017-18 season, the Springfield College men's tennis team was edged by visiting Gordon College, 5-4, on Wednesday afternoon on Appleton Courts.
Springfield is now 0-2 and will turn its focus on the spring portion of its season, which includes the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate.
The Pride fell behind early in the match after dropping two of doubles matches. Springfield's top squad of Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.) and Court Honda (Morioka, Japan) eased their way to an 8-3 win to start the match, only to have Gordon win 8-6 and 8-5 at the No. 2 and 3 spot, respectively.
In singles play, Gordon captured wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles to get within one point of clinching, before Romaine produced a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 1 and Honda finished off his opponent at No. 2 by a 6-3, 7-6 decision. However, the Scots gained their fifth point after Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y.) was clipped at the No. 3 position, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2. Chris Unger (Westfield, Mass.) later wrapped up the match with a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 win for the Pride playing at the No. 5 spot.
