Springfield, Mass. - April 12, 2017 - The Springfield College men's tennis team was edged by Coast Guard, 5-4, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday in the Springfield College Field House.
With the loss, Springfield dropped to 9-4, 1-2 in conference play while the Bears improve to 5-4, 2-0.
The Pride trailed 2-1 after doubles play as the top doubles squad of Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.) and Court Honda (Marioka, Japan) delivered a 8-5 win for the Pride. Springfield's Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) and Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn.) were edged by an 8-6 decision at the No. 2 spot.
Springfield's top three singles players all registered points for the Pride, with DeVarennes cruising at the top spot by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Romaine produced a 6-3, 7-6(6) win at No. 2, while Honda notched a 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3.
With the match even at four points apiece, the conference showdown came down to the No. 4 singles match. Despite winning the opening set, 6-2, Danielewicz was unable to hang on as he dropped the next two sets, 6-0, 6-3 as the Bears escaped with the 5-4 win.
Springfield will continue conference play will another critical showdown versus Wheaton at 1 pm.
