Men's Tennis Picks Up Critical Victory Over Rival Wheaton, 6-3

Springfield, Mass. – April 15, 2017 – The Springfield College men's tennis team produced a critical New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory on Saturday afternoon on Appleton Courts as it toppled Wheaton College, 6-3.

Springfield improved to 10-4, 2-2 in conference play with the victory.

The Pride found itself trailing 2-1 after doubles play as the Lyons earned victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.  Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) and Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn.) recorded the Pride's lone point, with an 8-3 victory at No. 2.

In singles play, the Pride put together an especially gritty performance to win five of the points en route to grabbing the conference win.  Court Honda (Marioka, Japan) delivered a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3, Chris Unger (Westfield, Mass.) earned a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6, and Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y.) grinded out a 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5.  Danielewicz would clinch the match with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 4 and DeVarennes later prevailed by a 6-2, 6-7, 10-5 triumph at the No. 1 position for Springfield.

Springfield will hit the courts again for another important conference match versus Clark on Wednesday at 4 pm.
