Fourth-Seeded Men's Tennis Knocks Off Fifth-Seeded Wheaton in NEWMAC Championship Quarterfinals

Springfield, Mass. - April 29, 2017 - For the second-consecutive season, the Springfield College men's tennis program will advance to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Semifinals, as the fourth-seeded Pride defeated fifth-seeded Wheaton, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Appleton Courts.

With the win, Springfield College improves to 12-5, marking the most wins in program history since the 1992 season when the Pride was 13-2 overall.

Springfield College opened up the match winning two of the three doubles points, as the No. 2 doubles squad of Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) and Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn.) and the No. 3 team of Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn.) and Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y.) each won by identical 8-4 decisions.

In singles play, it just took three victories to seal the match, as DeVarennes defeated Jeremiah Ryser (Cross River, N.Y.) at the No. 1 singles spot, Court Honda (Marioka, Japan) bested Alden Zeff (Stratham, N.H.) at No. 3 and Danielewicz cruised past Ned Roosevelt (New York, N.Y.) at No. 4 to clinch the match.

Next, Springfield College will advance to take on top-seeded MIT in the NEWMAC Championship Semifinals, on Saturday, May 6.
