No. 21 MIT Holds Off Men's Tennis, 6-3

Cambridge, Mass. - April 8, 2017 - The Springfield College men's tennis team suffered its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) setback of the season as it was defeated by MIT, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon in the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble.

Despite the loss, which dropped the Pride to 9-3, 1-1 on the year, it marked the most points that Springfield has ever taken off MIT in Division III program history.  The Engineers, who are currently ranked 21st nationally, have won the last 18 NEWMAC Championships.

In doubles play, Court Honda (Marioka, Japan) and Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.) delivered an 8-4 win at the top spot, while the No. 3 team of Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y.) and Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn.) were edged by an 8-6 decision.

Trailing 2-1 heading into singles play, Beynor produced a 6-3, 7-5 win at the No. 5 spot, while Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) prevailed at No. 1 with a 5-7, 6-1, 10-7 triumph.  MIT earned wins at No. 2, 3, 4, and 6 to hold on for a 6-3 win.

Springfield will now prepare for an important NEWMAC meeting with Coast Guard at Appleton Courts on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
