Norton, Mass. - April 7, 2018 - The Springfield College men's tennis team fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Wheaton College, 7-2, in the Beard Field House on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Pride is now 5-6 overall with an 0-2 record in conference play, while Wheaton improves to 5-4 on the year with a 1-0 mark in league play.
Springfield College picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, as Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.) and Court Honda (Morioka, Japan) defeated Javier Esteban De Celis (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Spain) and Jeremiah Ryser (Cross River, N.Y.), before dropping decisions at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to trail the Lyons 2-1 heading to singles.
Honda was the lone member of the Pride to win in singles, as the junior took the No. 2 singles match against Ryser, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7. Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y.) played a close match with Esteban de Celis at No. 3 singles, but fell 6-3, 3-6, 10-7, while Freddie Moffa (Granby, Conn.) gave Diego Garcia Anton (Alicante, Spain) a run at No. 6 singles, but fell 7-6, 3-6, 12-10.
Springfield College will return to action on Wednesday, April 11 when it travels to Emerson for a league match.
