Box Score Springfield, Mass. - January 22, 2020 - The Springfield College women's basketball team powered past Wheaton College, 63-40, on Wednesday night in Blake Arena.
The Pride now push to 11-6 on the year and hold a 2-0 record in NEWMAC play. Wheaton drops to 7-9 overall with a 1-1 record in conference play.
Springfield was led by the strong effort from Stephanie Lyons (Boston, Mass.), who finished with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, five rebounds, and three assists. Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) added 12 points, four boards, and four steals. Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) notched her sixth double-double of the season as the first-year tallied 11 points, 10 rebounds, and a pair blocks in 23 minutes of action. Grace Dzindolet (Holliston, Mass.) gave valuable minutes off the bench and recorded nine points, three rebounds, and four steals in the win. The Pride shot 26-of-56 for 46.4% from the field, canned 7-of-14 from deep, and stole the ball away 12 times in the victory.
For Wheaton, Bri Forbes and Sadie Shore each pitched in 10 points with Mikayla Pucci adding six points and nine rebounds. The Lyons were limited to 3-of-18 from three and turned the ball over 19 times.
The Pride raced out to a 8-0 start, highlighted by a finish through contact by Rudolph at the 9:04 mark. The Lyons were able to narrow the gap with a 7-0 run of their own capped off by a lay in by Shore with 2:54 remaining in the quarter. At 2:34, Rudolph would deflect pass and throw it ahead to a striding Goslin for the fast break bucket to give the Pride a 12-7 advantage. After Wheaton closed the deficit to 14-11 with five seconds left, Dzindolet raced down the court and hit a runner from the elbow to beat the first quarter buzzer and give Springfield a 16-11 lead.
At the 7:27 mark, the Lyons would bring the score to 18-17 off a Forbes bucket in the lane. The Pride poured on a 30-4 run over the next 11 minutes to open up their lead to 48-21 after Taylor Hall (Tolland, Conn.) kicked it out to Dzindolet for the mid range jumper with 4:58 remaining in the third quarter. With 1:26 remaining in the third, Lauren Rudolph (Franklin, Mass.) would swing the ball to Hourihan in the corner for the Pride's fifth three of the quarter bringing the lead to 51-24. In the third quarter, Springfield shot 6-of-11 (54.5%) from the field and 5-of-6 (83.3%) from deep.
At 5:13 in the fourth quarter, Dzindolet would rip the ball away and make a beautiful pass to Lyons, who finished with a reverse layup to give the Pride their largest lead of the game at 59-30, allowing to Springfield to coast to 63-40 victory.
Springfield will hit the road this Saturday as they travel to Mount Holyoke at 1pm.
