Women's Basketball Falls Short To Babson, 60-56

Babson Park, Mass. - February 19, 2020- The Springfield College women's basketball program fell to Babson College, 60-56, in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday night at Staake Gymnasium. 

The loss snaps an eight-game winning streak for the Pride and puts them at 17-7 with an 8-1 NEWMAC record while Babson remains 17-7 and 9-0 in confernece play.

Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) pulled down another double-double for the Pride with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) and Emily Jacques (Auburn, Maine) each put in 11 points. Rachel Vinton (Holden, Mass.) added eight points off the bench in the setback. 

Babson was led by Katherine Tamulionis' 21-point effort on 6-of-13 shooting. Megan Bauman gave the Beavers 15 points, four rebounds, and four assists on the night. Jacqueline Jozefick finished with seven points and 10 boards. Babson shot 43.8% from deep on 7-of-16 shooting. 

In the first quarter, the Pride jumped out to a 8-3 lead after Stephanie Lyons (Boston, Mass.) benefitted from a Jacques dish with 7:58 on the game clock. Babson responded by scoring seven-straight points to take a 10-8 lead after Emily Bonifacic finished in the lane at the 5:49 mark. Babson continued to gain an advantage as Shaye Galletta scored on back-to-back possessions to give the Beavers a 18-11 lead with 2:11 remaining in the quarter, while a three from Jozefick turned the Beaver lead to 21-12 with 32 seconds remaining. 

Babson would grow their biggest lead of the half with 2:13 remaining as Jade Perry knocked down a triple to make the score 32-18. The Pride closed the half with a Hourihan putback and a pair of free throws from Jacques with 27 seconds left to cut the Beavers' advantage to 32-22 at the half. 

With 2:30 remaining in the third quarter, Springfield went on a 8-1 run, which was sparked by a Vinton finish through contact and capped off by a free throw from Jacques to slim the Beavers lead to single digits at 46-39. 

At the 4:10 mark, Taylor Hall (Tolland, Conn.) finished in the paint to bring the Pride to within five at 50-45. At 2:02, a pair of free throws from Tamulionis would give the Beavers a 54-45 lead, but on the next possession, Jacques would drill a three to make it 54-48 with 1:49 remaining. A three from Goslin at the 1:08 mark and another from Vinton would bring Springfield within four at 58-54 with one minute to play. Goslin would get a steal on the next possession and give the Pride a chance to cut it to two with 45 seconds to play, but the Beavers would fend off the Pride's late surge for the victory. 

Springfield will now close out the regular season on Saturday against Wellesley at 12 pm.
