No. 2 Men's Volleyball Holds On For Four-Set Victory Against Arcadia

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - February 28, 2020 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team pulled out a four-set victory on Friday night in Dana Gymnasium over Arcadia University by the set scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 29-27.

The Pride bounced back from its first Division III loss of the season last weekend to improve to 14-2  as they came into the night ranked No. 2 in this week's AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll.  Arcadia slipped to 10-8 on the 2020 campaign.

Brennen Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) led the way for the Pride with 14 kills and a pair of aces, while  Jarrett Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) put away 13 kills and added three blocks.  Liam York (Kailua, Hawaii) was very efficient on the pin, delivering 12 kills at a .526 clip and Matt Lilley (Stony Brook, N.Y.) ran the Pride's offense to a .407 hitting percentage thanks to 41 assists and six kills of his own.   Chris Parker (East Northport, N.Y.) chipped in five blocks and Johjan Mussa Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) produced six digs.

For Arcadia, which hit .327 in the loss, Quinn Baily totaled 13 kills, hitting .500, while Austin Braas notched 11 kills at a .714 clip in the middle.  Anthony Devantier was credited with 45 assists.

Springfield hit .524 in the opening set, as York put away kills on all five of his swings.  After Springfield opened up a 9-6 lead when York buried a ball out of the back row, the visitors would tie things up at 10 on a block on the pin.  The set would be tied 10 times, the last coming at 20-all, as a kill from Brandow off the block finished off the longest rally of the match to force Arcadia into a timeout.  Anderson would elevate over the block for a kill at 24-22, and two points later, Arcadia's sixth service error of the set gave the Pride a 25-23 win.

It was Arcadia's offense that was impressive in the second as the Knights hit .500 and held the Pride to a .182 team hitting percentage.  Even at 15-all, Arcadia produced a 6-1 spurt as Springfield committed three-straight miscues to give the Knights a 21-16 edge.  Springfield would get no closer than 21-18, and the Knights scored the final four points to knot the match up at a set apiece.

In the third, Anderson was sensational, registering kill on all seven of his attempts to power the Springfield offense to a .619 hitting percentage. After a cross-court kill by Anderson pushed the Pride ahead 15-12, Arcadia stormed back with an 8-5 surge to knot things at 20-all.   However, back-to-back miscues by the visitors allowed the Pride to tain a 23-21 edge, and Anderson and York each came up with huge kills to compete the 25-22 win.

In the fourth, Parker was in on four-blocks as part of a six-point run for Springfield as it gained an 11-8 edge.  The lead would grow to 15-10 on an ace from Anderson, but Arcadia would respond with an 8-2 burst to take an 18-17 advantage.  In a frame that had five lead changes and 12 ties, Springfield fought off three-set points, the last coming at 27-26, as Parker would convert out of the middle and Brandow would unleash an ace for match point.  Anderson then closed the door on the match with his 13th kill of the night to complete the four-set triumph.

Up next for Springfield, the Pride will host Wentworth at 6 pm in Blake Arena on Saturday evening.
