Women's Soccer Closes Season In NEWMAC Championship Final

Box Score

Boston, Mass. - November 6, 2021 - The Springfield College women's soccer program lost to nationally-ranked MIT, 6-0 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Soccer Championship Tournament Final on Saturday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium.

Springfield closes out its season with a 7-9-3 record and made its 11th appearance in the NEWMAC Final in the last 14 seasons. MIT, who was ranked eighth overall in the last United Soccer Coaches National Poll, claims its fourth-straight conference championship.

Amelia Harper (Taylorsville, Utah) and Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) split time in the net for the Pride in the setback. The keepers combined for six saves on the afternoon.

The hosts got on the board just a 1:36 into the championship contest as Megan Rowlett carried the ball down the left side and connected with the foot of Karenna Groff to take a 1-0 lead. The Engineers added to their lead with a deep strike from Ashley English at 13:51, which progessed the advantage to 2-0. Directly following the MIT score, Springfield would look to dip into the Engineers' lead as Adalia Malick (Bristol, Conn.) ripped a shot on frame, however Lauren Castle would make a play on the try. MIT would score its third goal, in the 39th-minute of the first half, on a fast break attack from Ceci Munoz, pushing the halftime score to 3-0.

MIT would tack on three more goals in the second half as Natalie Barnouw would finish off a feed from English at 48:27, then, Rowlett would slide in for the 5-0 goal for the Engineers with 57:16 on the clock. Nicole Sweeney (Grafton, Mass.) put a shot on frame in 62nd-minute, which proved to be the best chance for the Pride in the second half of action. The victory would be capped off by English in the 70th-minute for MIT with another goal to make a 6-0 score for the Engineers.
