Box Score Hartford, Conn. - December 1, 2021 - The Springfield College men's basketball team was bested by Trinity College, 87-64, in non-conference play on Wednesday night.
The Bantams improved to 5-2 with the victory, while the Pride's record dipped to 0-5.
Daryl Costa (Providence, R.I.) led all players with 16 points as he canned four triples in the setback, while Zeke Blauner (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points and five boards. Panayiotis Kapanides (Bedford, Mass.) added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Trinity held a 46-32 edge on the glass, which helped them to 22 second-chance points. A total of five Bantams scored in double figures and 13 different players scored in the contest, led by Donald Jordan and Gilbert Otoo, who each netted 13 points.
Springfield owned a 7-6 advantage at the 16:31 mark of the opening half when Jacob Morales (Montvale, N.J.) buried a corner three. However, the Pride would be held off the scoreboard for the next five minutes as the hosts went on a 9-0 run to snag a 15-7 edge. Casey Lane (Wilton, N.H.) was able to connect from deep to break the scoring drought at 11:26 to pull Springfield within five, only to have the Bantams drill four three-pointers as part of an 18-8 push as their lead ballooned to 33-18 at the 7:45 mark. With under five to play, Blauner hit a pair from the charity stripe to make it a 13-point game, but Trinity would regain a 17-point edge to take a 46-29 lead into the halftime break.
The Bantams extended their lead to 20 points within the opening two minutes of the second half and would go on to shoot over 55% from the floor, connecting on 15-of-27 attempts in the stanza, to pull away with the non-conference win. Costa would account for 11 points in the second half for the Pride.
This weekend, Springfield will travel to Vermont to compete in Norwich's Ed Hockenbury Classic, beginning with an 8 pm contest versus Maine-Fort Kent.
