Box Score Westfield, Mass. - December 2, 2021 - The Springfield College women's basketball program blew past Westfield State, 93-59, in non-conference play on Thursday night at Woodward Center.
Springfield, who is receiving votes in the latest national polls, is now 8-0 on the year. The start to season marks the first time the Pride have an 8-0 record since the 1981-82 campaign. The visitors dominated the glass as the team hauled in 61 rebounds and scored 62 points in the paint on the evening.
Springfield had four players score in double figures with Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) leading the way with a massive stat line of 17 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, three steals, five rejections. Sidney Wentland (Elk River, Minn.) poured in 14 points and 16 rebounds, including eight offensive. Stephanie Lyons (Boston, Mass.) scored a team-high 19 points, while Rachel Vinton (Rutland, Mass.) produced 15 points and 11 assists in the win.
Springfield raced out to a 10-2 lead over the Owls as Hourihan put an outlet pass perfectly in the hands of Lyons for the leak out lay in at the 5:56 mark in the first quarter, which forced a timeout. Westfield used a 6-1 burst as Melissa Gray and Paris Wilkey each canned a three to make the score 13-8. After a pair of free throws from Amanda Carr (West Haven, Conn.), neither team would score until the final 20 seconds of the quarter as Lila Labrie knocked in a three to make the score 19-11, however Wentland would score inside off the pass from Riley Robinson (Adams, Mass.) to give the Pride a 21-11 lead after one.
Springfield's lead would continue to mount in the second quarter as the Pride outscored the hosts 22-11. With 34 seconds remaining in the half, another layup from Lyons would give Springfield its largest lead of the half at 43-22, entering the break.
In the third quarter, Springfield pushed its lead to as much as 35 after Emma Glaser (Norfolk, Mass.) would start the break and throw it ahead to Vinton, who dropped it off to a cutting Lindsey Laughlan (Ellington, Conn.) for the bucket, which made the score 66-31 with 1:40 remaining in the stanza.
In the fourth quarter, Springfield shot 10-of-17 from the field and the lead never got lower than 21 points. At 1:24 remaining in the game, Vinton knocked in a three to cap off the 93-59 win.
Springfield will now play next Tuesday, December 7 when it hosts Worcester State.
