Men's Basketball Captures Ed Hockebury Classic With 78-55 Win At Norwich

Box Score

Northfield, Vt. - December 4, 2021 - The Springfield College men's basketball team toppled host Norwich University, 78-55, to win the Ed Hockenbury Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Springfield strung together consecutive wins this weekend to move to 2-5 on the season, while the Cadets dropped to 5-3.

Collin Lindsay (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was named the MVP as he netted 19 points in the championship, going 8-of-11 from the field. Zeke Blauner (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) was also named to the all-tournament team as he scored 17 points, while Panayiotis Kapanides (Bedford, Mass.) registered a double double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Daryl Costa (Providence, R.I.) stuffed his stat line with nine points, eight rebounds, and seven assists in a game where the Pride turned nine Norwich turnovers into 19 points.  The Pride shot 49% from the floor, including 8-of-17 from downtown.

Trailing 8-6 in the opening five-plus minutes of the game, Kapanides knocked down three-pointers on consecutive trips down the floor before Costa delivered a deep triple of his own to give the Pride a 17-9 cushion at the 10:55 mark.  After the Cadets pulled within 21-15 with just over four minutes left in the stanza, Springfield closed out the half on a 12-3 push, fueled by five points from Costa, to take a 33-18 lead. Springfield buried 5-of-10 from deep in the opening 20 minutes and Blauner led all players with nine points, as the Pride limited Norwich to just 8-of-34 (23.5%) from the floor.

Norwich pulled within 43-31 at 15:29, but Lindsay knocked down a jumper and Blauner converted a three-point play to push the Pride's lead back to 17 just over a minute later.  Ty Garry (Southington, Conn.) later got free on a back cut for a score following a great look from Justin Dunne (Derry, N.H.) to force Norwich into a timeout with the score 53-34 with 12:04 remaining in regulation. Jack Meagher (Sydney, Australia) put back his own miss inside three minutes to give Springfield a 25-point lead as the Pride would cruise to a 78-55 victory.

On Tuesday night, Springfield will host No. 21 Amherst at 7:30 pm in Blake Arena.
