No. 1 Men's Volleyball Drops Lasell In Straight Sets For Doubleheader Sweep

Springfield, Mass. - April 11, 2021 -  The Springfield College men's volleyball team returned to Blake Arena for the first time since March 13 and earned a pair of straight-set victories over Lasell.  Springfield won the opener, 25-20, 25-18, 25-22 before cruising to a 25-11, 25-23, 25-14 victory in the nightcap.

The Pride, who was ranked No. 1 in the AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, bounced back from its first loss of the season to improve to 5-1.  Springfield will now await its postseason fate when it tunes into the NCAA Championship Selection Show, which will air on NCAA.com at 10 am on April 12.

Match 1 - Springfield 3, Lasell 0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-22)

Jarrett Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) put together a dominant performance to lead the Pride to the three-set win as he totaled 19 kills on a .515 hitting percentage to go along with six digs, four aces, and a block.  Brennen Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) contributed 11 digs and nine kills, Justin Brosnan (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) registered nine digs, and Matt Lilley (Stony Brook, N.Y.) was credited with 35 assists.  Lasell was limited to a .060 hitting percentage in the loss.

The visiting Lasers whistled for a timeout trailing 15-11 in the first after an attack sailed wide, and Brandow and Chris Parker (East Northport, N.Y.) snuffed out a back row attack for a block at 17-13.  After back-to-back aces pulled Lasell within 19-18, Springfield closed out the frame on a 6-2 surge as Anderson delivered three kills down the stretch for the 25-20 win. 

Even at 13-all in the second, Springfield scored four-straight points, as a Brandow aces forced Lasell into a timeout trailing 17-13.  Anderson elevated for a stuff block at 21-14, and would register eight kills in the frame to power the Pride to a 25-18 win. 

The third set featured 12 ties and five lead changes, the last coming at 20-all.  However, a kill from Nate Reynolds (Baltimore, Md.) and ace from Anderson gave the Pride a two point cushion as Lasell called for a timeout.  Springfield would earn match point when Brandow put away a hard-angled kill and would then follow with his third kill of the stanza two points later to complete the sweep at 25-22.  

Match 2 - Springfield 3, Lasell 0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-14)

 Springfield founds its rhythm in the second match as a balanced offensive attack hit at a .452 clip.  Jarrett Anderson led all players with nine kills and Brennen Brandow added eight as the duo of Matt Lilley and Paolo Mondini (Bolingbrook, Ill.) combined for 32 assists.  The Pride poured on the pressure from the endline, totaling 15 aces, including four each from Anderson and Chris Parker, while Nate Reynolds totaled a match-high three blocks. 

 The Pride registered a .643 team hitting percentage in the first set and held Lasell to just two kills which came on a -.364 hitting percentage.  Springfield was impressive from the service line in the set, totaling eight aces, including three from Anderson.  After falling behing 8-7, Springfield closed out the set on a 18-3 burst, highlighted by tough serving from Parker and Matt Van Dusen (Rexford, N.Y.), and took the 25-11 win on an ace from Thomas Wollweber (Oceanside, Calif.).

 There were 12 ties in the second set as Springfield racked up 16 kills in the frame, including four from Anderson.  Lasell, which trailed by as many as five points in the early going, would battle back to tie the set up at 23-all, only to have Anderson deliver a sideout kill and Lilley and Reynolds combine for a block on the pin for the 25-23 win. 

Brandow carried the offense in the third, totaling five of Springfield's 12 kills as the hosts hit .421 and held the Lasers to just four kills on a .000 hitting percentage.  Facing an 8-4 deficit, Springfield scored 16 of the next 19 points in the match to open up a 20-11 edge following a kill from Van Dusen.  Springfield would complete the win as Luis Martinez Morales (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) blistered an ace in the 25-14 victory.
