Box Score Cambridge, Mass. - January 15, 2022 - The Springfield College men's basketball team was downed by MIT, 73-52, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play in Rockwell Cage.
Ty Garry (Southington, Conn.) and Daryl Costa (Providence, R.I.) each tallied 12 points in the setback, while Nick Bray (Hartford, Conn.) pumped in 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. The Pride was hurt by 22 turnovers as it dropped to 3-10, 1-3 in conference play, while the Engineers improved to 9-5, 2-2. A game-high 21-point effort from Dan Pilsbury led the Engineers to the wire-to-wire victory.
The Engineers came out of the gates fast and jumped to an 11-3 lead just 4:42 in following a three-pointer from Ian Hinkley. MIT pushed the advantage into double digits at 20-10 with 6:50 on the clock and led by at least eight over the remainder of the half. Panayiotis Kapanides (Bedford, Mass.) hit a pair of free throws at the 4:59 mark to pull the Pride within 22-14, but MIT hung tough on defense and took a 33-20 lead into halftime.
MIT kept up the defensive pressure over the final 20 minutes of play while shooting 45.2 percent from the field in the period. Leading by at least 13 points over the second half, the Engineers extended the lead to as many as 66-44 with 2:15 remaining. A late three-pointer in the final seconds to account for the 21-point final as the Engineers finished the game with nine triples in total.
The Pride will stay on the road as its next conference game will be in Connectict on Wednesday versus Coast Guard in a 7:30 pm tilt.
