Box Score 2 Springfield, Mass. - February 1, 2022 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team recorded a pair of straight-set victories over No. 3 Stevens and Rivier on Saturday afternoon in Blake Arena.
Springfield, which was the top-ranked team in the most recent AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, is now 10-0 on the year.
The Pride play again next Wednesday when it travels to face New Paltz in a 6 pm match.
Springfield 3, Stevens 0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-21)
Going up against the nation's third-ranked team, the duo of Brennen Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) and Jarrett Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) were tremendous in the victory as Brandow turned in 18 kills and Anderson totaled 14 kills on 19 errorless attempts for a .737 hitting percentage. Matt Lilley (Stony Brook, N.Y.) handed out 38 assists in leading the Pride to a .485 team hitting percentage and Johjan Mussa Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) registered a match-best 10 digs.
Stevens was held to a .056 hitting percentage and Jack Fyda finished with a team-best seven kills. It marked the lowest team hitting percentage for Stevens since April 28, 2018 when the Ducks hit .022 in the NCAA Division III National Championship versus Springfield.
The first set was the closest as it featured 10 ties and four lead changes. Even at 12, Springfild put together a 4-1 burst, as Brandow put away a kill in system to force Stevens into a timeout. Chris Parker (East Northport, N.Y.) bounced a ball in transition at 21-17 and Anderson sealed the 25-20 win with his ninth kill of the frame, matching the entire offensive team output of Stevens in a set as the Pride totaled 18 kills at a .556 clip.
It was Brandow who carried the offense in the second set as he tallied seven kills as part of an offense that hit .471. Springfield jumped out to an 8-4 lead following consecutive blocks and pushed its advantage to 18-11 when Noah Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) converted in transtition. Brandow put away an overpass kill for set point and followed up with his seventh of the frame to seal a 25-14 win.
Tied at 13 in the third, Brandow produced a kill and then went back to the service line and blistered an ace as the Ducks called for a timeout. Springfield kept up the pressure, building a 20-15 edge following back-to-back aces from Anderson, and would earn the 25-20 win on Anderson's fourth kill of the set.
Springfield 3, Rivier 0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-16)
Springfield continued its winning ways with another dominant performance as it his .473 against the Raiders while holding the visitors to a -.083 hitting percentage. Chris Parker (East Northport, N.Y.) led all players with nine kills on 11 errorless attempts for a .818 hitting percentage, while both Brennen Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) and Jarrett Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) added eight kills apiece. Matt Lilley (Stony Brook, N.Y.) tallied 27 assists and Brandow had three of the Pride's 10 service aces.
Knotted at 10 in the opening set, Springfield went on a 6-1 run to open up a 16-11 edge following a kill out of the back row by Brandow. Parker was able to drop in an ace on set point for the 25-15 win as the Pride hit .435, led by four kills from Brandow.
Anderson cranked a ball down the line to give the hosts a 14-5 lead in the second and Rivier called for a timeout at 20-8 after Parker and Noah Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) delivered a block. Springfield had 14 kills on a .650 hitting percentage in the set, with Anderson connecting for kills on all six of his attempts.
Springfield broke open a 7-7 game in the third with four-straight points, which was capped off by another ace from Parker. The Pride benefitted from 10 hitting errors in the frame by Rivier as Springfield totaled five aces and five kills in the stanza to cruise to a 25-16 win.
