Springfield, Mass. - April 16, 2022 - The Springfield College women's tennis team battled to a 5-4 win over visiting Smith in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Appleton Courts on Saturday.
The win lifted Springfield's record to 10-4-1 on the season and 3-2 in NEWMAC play.
Springfield earned one point in doubles play as Ramida Manataweewat (Thailand, Bangkok) and Kate Rosselli (Trumbull, Conn.) acheived an 8-4 win at the No. 3 spot.
After Smith won at No. 2 singles to take a 3-1 lead in the match, Taylor Suozzo (Bedford, N.H.) responded with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 5. However, Smith added a win at No. 4 to come within one point of clinching before Gabriella Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1 and Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) prevailed by a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 margin to knot up the match.
With the conference showdown coming down to No. 3 singes Manataweewat delivered a gritty performance to clinch the match with a 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 victory.
Springfield will travel to face Babson on Thursday for a 2:30 tilt.
