Amherst, Mass. - September 7, 2022 - The Springfield College women's soccer program came up short on the road at Amherst College, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Hitchcock Field. 

The Pride are now 1-1 this season, while Amherst College, who was ranked No. 18 in the United Soccer Division III Coaches' Preseason Poll, begins its season with a win. Springfield out nine of its 12 shots on frame in the contest. 

Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) collected seven saves in goal for the Pride.

Springfield took the first three shots of the game looking for an early lead, but Mika Fisher turned both away for the Mammoths. Later in the half, Springfield had a pair of chances that both were that got past Fisher, but was cleared out by defenders to keep the visitors' off the scoreboard. With less than two minutes to go in the half, Abby Schawartz controlled a throw in and sent the ball to Liza Katz for the late goal to send the Mammoths up 1-0 after the first half. 

Springfield struck first in the second half to even up the score at 1-1 with 51:06 on the clock following a Katie Vita (Wallingford, Conn.) goal as she lofted a deep shot from outside the box just under the cross bar. Amherst rebuttled with back-to-back goals with the latest coming at 58:16 from Schwartz. With 30:02 left in the game, Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) was awarded a penalty kick that was punched back to the foot of Vasiliky Rizos (Southampton, Mass.), who rocked in the rebound goal and closed the gap to 3-2. For the remainder of the period, the Pride could not find an opportunity to complete the upset as Amherst tallied two more goals to take the 5-2 win. 

Springfield will open up at Brock-Affleck Field on Saturday at 11 am against Western Connecticut State.
