Hourihan Nets 1,000th Career Point As Women's Basketball Races Past Wellesley

Wellesley, Mass. - January 21, 2023 - Springfield College's Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored her 1000th career point as the women's basketball program won a 68-34 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game over Wellesley College on Saturday afternoon at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

Hourihan's 17 points, eight rebounds, and four assists were all team highs as she became the 17th student-athlete in program history to reach the career milestone. Jaélen Daubon (Hyde Park, N.Y.) added 11 points and Rachel Vinton (Rutland, Mass.) connected for 10 points, seven boards, and four assists in helping the Pride improve to 12-5, 2-0 in conference play.  The Blue were led by nine points from both Pujita Shukla and Jiyun Chae and  as the hosts fell to 7-10, 1-2 in NEWMAC action. 

The Blue struck first on a backdoor cut from Arla Hofer, but Springfield scored 10 of the next 15 points, highlighted by a three pointer from Stefany Padula (Franklin, Mass.). The teams stayed even throughout the quarter with Springfield leading 11-9 after one.

The Pride controlled the second quarter with Hourihan scoring six in the period and Springfield scored 18 unanswered points with Hourihan picking up three steals and a block in the burst. Wellesley's Shannon Li scored the final five points of the quarter to make the game 29-16 going into the half.

After an early three by Wellesley Anna Greenthal, the Pride ran their lead to 22 at 44-22 on a jumper from Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) and would hold a 44-25 cushion heading into the final 10 minutes of play. 

Springfield poured in 24 points in the final quarter and would hold the hosts to single-digits in scoring column for the fourth quarter in a row as it eased its way to the win.  Hourihan would score nine points in the frame, including her 1000th career point with 2:39 left in quarter as the visitors went on to close out a 68-34 win.

Springfield will play at home for the first time since January 4 when it hosts MIT on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
