Box Score South Hadley, Mass. – October 11, 2023 – Senior Maddie Daigneault (Watertown, Conn.) registered what proved to be the game winning goal in the second half as the Springfield College women's soccer team picked up three points with a 3-1 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win at Mount Holyoke College this evening.
Springfield improved to 7-3-2 overall and to 5-1-0 (15 points) in the NEWMAC, while Mount Holyoke fell to 2-7-2, 0-6-0.
Mount Holyoke opened the scoring tonight as Hannah Keochiakian went 1-on-1 with Springfield keeper Taryn Ryan (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and poked the ball into the net for the 1-0 edge just five minutes into the contest. Springfield, however, answered five minutes later when sophomore Sadie Crozier (North Smithfield, R.I.) gathered the ball off a failed clear by the Lyons backline and pushed it into the net for the equalizer and her third goal of the season.
The score remained the same until midway through the second stanza when senior Jen Walker (Webster, Mass.) crossed the ball into the box to the feet of Daigneault. The senior took one step around the defender and potted her first collegiate goal.
Before the final buzzer sounded, sophomore Kaitlyn Suller (Oviedo, Fla.) registered her third goal of the year as she ripped the ball from 25 yards out over the hands of Clarissa Govea for the all-important insurance marker to account for the 3-1 final.
Springfield held a 30-9 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Ryan, who pushed her record to 5-3-2 in net, made six saves on seven shots for the Pride, tying her second most saves of the season.
The Pride will return to action on Saturday, October 14 when Springfield hosts Emerson College in another NEWMAC contest on Brock-Affleck Field. Prior to the game, Springfield will honor its senior class.
