Box Score Cambridge, Mass. – November 2, 2023 – The fourth-seeded Springfield College women's soccer team fell to top-seeded and No. 14 nationally-ranked MIT, 6-1, in the semifinal round of the 2023 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament tonight on Roberts Field.
Springfield sees its season come to a close with an overall record of 8-5-6, while MIT improves to 18-3-1 and moves on to the championship final and will host second-seeded Babson College on Saturday afternoon to compete for the league's automatic berth to the 2023 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
MIT scored three times in the opening half en route to the semifinal win. An own goal off an MIT corner kick gave the Engineers a 1-0 edge before Natalie Barnouw and Macy Lehrer found the back of the net for the hosts prior to the halftime buzzer.
The host Engineers added a pair of goals in the second half in a span of less than eight minutes before sophomore Kaitlyn Suller (Oviedo, Florida) found the back of the net for Springfield in the 62 minute to avoid the shutout. Sean Luk capped the scoring for MIT in the 75th minute to account for the 6-1 final.
MIT held an 21-11 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Springfield keeper Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) made ten saves to close her season in net for the Pride. Springfield recorded eight wins for the second straight season.
