Box Score New London, Conn. - February 15, 2023 - The Springfield College women's basketball team scored more than 80 points for the second-straight game as it bested Coast Guard, 85-63, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday.
Springfield, which appeared in this week's NCAA Division III Regional Rankings, in now 16-8, 6-3 against conference foes, while the Bears fell to 12-12, 4-5 in conference outings.
After scoring a season-best 81 points against Emerson on Saturday, Springfield's offense continued to thrive against Coast Guard as the Pride scored 85 points in the triumph. Angela Czeremcha's (West Springfield, Mass.) was dominant for the Pride as she netted a career-best 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting to along with nine boards, while Kayla Madden (Ashland, Mass.) drilled five three pointers en route to 17 points. Rachel Vinton (Rutland, Mass.) contributed 15 points and seven rebounds and Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) produced a double double of 13 points and 11 boards.
After trailing 7-5 in the early going, Springfield blew the game open with an 18-0 run capped off by Vinton's third triple of the quarter as the lead ballooned to a a 23-7 edge with 2:39 on the clock. Springfield's advantage would grow to 28-9 when Czeremcha scored down low inside the final minute and the Pride would own a 28-14 lead heading into the second quarter.
Both teams would score 18 points in the second quarter as Springfield was held to just 4-of-17 from the field, but would go into the break with a 46-32 cushion.
It was the Bears offense that came alive in the third as the hosts shot 7-of-12 from the field and drilled four of their six attempts from downtown to storm all the way back and make it a 58-53 lead with just over a minute left in the frame. Hourihan would knock down a jumper in the final seconds to make it a 60-53 game entering the fourth.
The Pride only got five points from its bench in the game, but none was bigger than Riley Robinson's (Adams, Mass.) three pointer on the first possesion of the fourth quarter, as Springfield seized momentum back. From there it was all Springfield as it outscored the hosts by a 25-9 margin in the quarter thanks to 8-of-14 shooting, including six three pointers. Madden was instrumental in the fourth as she connected on all three of her bids from downtown, including her fifth of the game with 18 seconds left that concluded the scoring at 85-62.
Springfield will play in its regular-season finale on Saturday when it hosts Mount Holyoke at 1 pm.
