Box Score 2 Springfield, Mass. - February 4, 2023 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team swept Rivier and SUNY Potsdam in its first home tri-match of the season on Saturday in Blake Arena.
Springfield, which was ranked No. 4 in the latest AVCA Division III National Poll, is now 7-1 on the year.
The Pride will return to Blake Arena on Tuesday when it hosts in-state foe Lasell ast 7 pm.
In its first match of the afternoon, Springfield cruised in straight sets over the visiting Raiders as Jarrett Anderson (Largo, Fla.) led all scorers with 19 points on 14 points, four aces, and two blocks while notching a team-best five digs. Carter Durivage (East Greenbush, N.Y.) delivered seven kills off the bench on the pin and Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) totaled 26 assists, two blocks, and two aces. Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) led all players with four blocks and Noah Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) added six kills of his own. Springfield held Rivier to a .125 hitting percentage and notched 12 aces in the victory.
Weislo put away an overpass to give Springfield an early 5-2 lead in the first before Evan Costley (Simi Valley, Calif.) would later score in transition to push the hosts lead to 12-8. Thanks to a strong serving run from Ethan Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.), the Pride's cushion would balloon to 20-12 after Noah Weislo ripped a cross court kill. Rivier would storm back to tie the game up at 22-all but the Pride's block came alive as a block by Joel DeCamp (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Anderson coupled with a stuff block by Rouleau gave Springfield set point. Ryan Roller (West Hartford, Conn.) then blistered an ace for the 25-22 win.
Leading 9-6 in the second, Anderson took control of the match from the service line as he produced three aces in a scoring spurt that helped the Pride's lead grow to 16-6. In a set where Rivier hit -.250, Springfield hit at a .381 clip with Durivage providing an offensive spark with four kills in the 25-13 win.
It was a back-and-forth third set until Springfield was able to gain a 12-7 lead following a Rivier attack error. The Raders would make it close at 19-18, but consecutive errors gave the Pride some breathing room and Anderson would later put away his sixth kill of the set to complete the 25-22 triumph.
Springfield 3, SUNY Potsdam 0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-15)
Springfield's offense would hit at a .529 clip as Ethan Weislo handed out 26 assists in the win. The Pride would turn in 16 service aces as well, with Paolo Mondini (Bolingbrook, Ill.) Weislo, and Ethan Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) each having three winners from the end line. Jarrett Anderson totaled eight kills on 10 errorless attempts, Walters added six kills, and both Matt Van Dusen (Rexford, N.Y.) and Chris Rouleau put away five kills. Potsdam hit just .050 in the contest.
In the first set, there were six ties and three lead changes before Springfield broke open a 17-16 game with a 4-1 push that forced SUNY Potsdam into a timeout following a kill from Reed Bonkovsky (Richmond, Va.). Ryan Roller would later unleash the Pride's seventh service ace of the frame to complete the 25-18 win.
The Pride hit at a .615 clip in the second set while the visitors were held to a -.111 team hitting percentage. Leading 11-8 midway through the frame, Springfield poured on a 11-1 burst capped off by a big swing from Rouleau to gain control. Walter ripped Springfield's eighth ace of the set to seal thw 25-12 win.
With an 11-8 advantage, Springfield used a 5-2 push, with a Van Dusen kill at 16-10 forcing the visitors into another timeout. Seven different student-athletes recorded at least one kill in the third, led by Van Dusen's five terminations, and Walter converted Springfield's 13th kill of the set to finish off the sweep.
