Orlando, Fla. - March 13, 2023 - In its first match of its Spring Break trip to Florida, the Springfield College women's tennis team outlasted Ithaca, 5-4, at the USTA National Training Center.
In its first competition since October 11, the win boosts the Pride's record to 3-2 on the season, as it also marked the first victory for new head coach Tanner DeVarennes.
The match began with singles competition and Veronica Fulgieri (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) was first off the court after a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot. Ithaca would win the next three matches at No. 6, No. 4, and No. 1 before Ramida Manataweewat (Thailand, Bangkok) notched a 7-5, 6-2 triumph at No. 2 and Emma Aberle (West Warren, Mass.) battled her way to a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 win at the No. 5 spot.
In doubles action, Kate Rosselli (Trumbull, Conn.) and Taylor Suozzo (Bedford, N.H.) prevailed for Springfield by an 8-3 decision at No. 3 and Gabby Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) and Manataweewat clinched the match following a 9-7 win at No. 1.
Springfield will play again on Tuesday when it takes on St. Scholastica at 12:30 pm
