Box Score Springfield, Mass. - March 28, 2023 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team eased past visiting Elms in straight sets on Tuesday by the scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-11.
Ranked fourth in today's AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, Springfield improved to 21-2 on the year, while Elms dropped to 3-20.
Playing Blake Arena for the first time since March 4, Springfield was led by Talon Kohler's (Tucson, Ariz.) match-best 14 kills, while Matt Van Dusen (Rexford, N.Y.) notched nine kills and Ryan Roller (West Hartford, Conn.) totaled eight kills and four aces. Paolo Mondini (Bolingbrook, Ill.) produced 37 assists and nine digs as Springfield registered 42 kills in the three-set victory.
Elms jumped out to an 11-7 advantage to start the match, only to have Springfield respond with a four-point burst, getting two kills and a block from Van Dusen to key the spurt. Elms would regain a 16-13 edge, but Springfield would close out the set on a 12-3 run en route to the 25-19 win.
Knotted up at 11 in the second, a kill from Roller jump started a 7-2 run as the Pride gained some breathing room. Roller would complete the 25-18 win with his fourth kill of the set as the Pride limited the visitors to a -.056 hitting percentage in the frame.
Behind two aces and a kill from Roller, Springfield scored the first four points of the third set and never looked back. A kill from Kohler would push the Pride's advantage to 22-5 and Reed Bonkovsky (Richmond, Va.) converted out of the middle for his fourth kill of the stanza to wrap up the 25-11 triumph.
On Friday, Springfield will host No. 2 Vassar in a showdown of nationally-ranked squads in Blake Arena at 6 pm.
