Springfield, Mass. - April 25, 2023 -The Springfield College women's tennis team was defeated by Smith College, 5-1, on Tuesday afternoon in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Quarterfinals on Appleton Courts.
After earning the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament for the second-straight season, its highest ever in a NEWMAC Championship, Springfield was edged to have its season come to a close with a 9-9 mark. The fifth-seeded Pioneers are now 8-6 and advanced to the NEWMAC Championship Semifinals against top-seeded Babson.
It was a very competitive opening doubles session, with two matches going to a tiebreak. After Smith earned the first win of the day at No. 2 doubles, Veronica Fulgieri (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Alysa Elliott (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) battled their way to an 8-7 (7-3) victory at No. 3. The Pioneers would prevail at the top doubles spot to take a 2-1 lead as Gabby Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) and Ramida Manataweewat (Thailand, Bangkok) were edged by a 8-7 (7-3) decision.
Smith carried that momentum into singles play earning a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5, a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 3, and a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 6 to clinch the match.
